What a small business website actually costs in Calgary
Real price brackets, what moves you between them, and the ongoing costs that rarely appear in a quote.
Nobody wants to publish this number, which is exactly why everybody searches for it. Here is a straight answer, with the reasons the range is so wide.
Those brackets hold reasonably well across Calgary and Alberta. What moves you between them is rarely the design.
What actually drives the price
Page count matters less than you think
A five page site and a twelve page site are not wildly different in cost if the twelve pages share a structure. Every genuinely unique layout costs money. Every repeated one is nearly free.
Content is the real schedule risk
Most projects that run long are waiting on the client, not the developer. Photographs, service descriptions, staff bios, pricing. If you have not written it, the project stops. Writing it for you is legitimate work and should be quoted.
Integrations are where budgets go
Booking systems, payment processing, CRM connections, inventory feeds, quoting tools. A brochure site is straightforward. The moment it talks to another system, you are paying for engineering rather than pages.
Whoever is building it
A freelancer, a small studio, and a full agency will quote the same brief very differently, and all three can be correct. You are buying different amounts of process, availability, and risk absorption.
Ask what happens after launch. A cheap build with no handover, no training, and no way to edit your own content is not cheap. It is a subscription to whoever built it, priced one change request at a time.
The ongoing costs people forget
- Domain: roughly $20 a year.
- Hosting: anywhere from free on modern static hosts to a few hundred a year for heavier setups.
- Platform fees: if you are on a hosted ecommerce platform, a monthly subscription plus transaction fees.
- Maintenance: updates, plugin patches, security. Either your time or someone else's.
- Content updates: the one that quietly costs the most if you cannot make changes yourself.
What you should get for the money
Regardless of bracket, a website built in 2026 should arrive with all of this. If a quote does not mention them, ask.
- It loads fast on a phone on mobile data, not just on the developer's laptop.
- It is readable and usable with a keyboard and a screen reader.
- It has correct page titles and descriptions, so search engines can place it.
- It is connected to analytics and Search Console from day one.
- You can edit your own text without filing a ticket.
- You own the domain, the hosting account, and the code.
A website that looks expensive and cannot be found is worse than a plain one that ranks.
How to tell which bracket you are actually in
Answer three questions honestly.
Does your website need to sell, or only to confirm you exist? A trades business whose customers find them by referral and just want to check they are real needs a very different site from one competing for search traffic.
Will it need to talk to anything else? Booking, payments, inventory, a CRM. Every yes moves you up a bracket.
How often will it change? A site you update weekly needs to be built for editing. A site that will sit unchanged for three years does not.
Most Calgary small businesses land in the template or lower custom range and are well served there. The businesses that genuinely need the top bracket usually know why.
A note on the cheapest option
Building it yourself on a website builder is a perfectly reasonable choice when cash is the binding constraint. Just price your own time honestly. Two full weekends is real money, and the second and third redesign, when you decide you hate it, are also real money.
We do web design and development in Calgary across the template and custom brackets, and our small business website packages are quoted at fixed scope up front so you know the bracket before you start. We will tell you when a simpler option would serve you better. If you would rather ask a question than fill in a form, Atlas answers directly, or you can get in touch.
Tell us what the site needs to do. We will tell you the bracket, the timeline, and what would make it cost more.
